A Disaster of Historic Scale

Nepal continues to face one of the most devastating natural disasters in its recent history following the catastrophic flash floods that struck the Himalayan region in late August 2026. Triggered by a massive glacier-related flood event near the Nepal-Tibet border, the disaster unleashed enormous volumes of water and debris through the Trishuli River basin, causing widespread destruction across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and surrounding districts.

According to the latest reports from Nepal's disaster management authorities, the death toll has risen to more than 900 people, while over 4,200 individuals remain missing. More than 10,000 people have been rescued, and thousands of families have been displaced from their homes. Search and rescue teams continue to work around the clock despite difficult terrain, severe infrastructure damage, and limited access to remote communities.

Critical Infrastructure Severely Damaged

The floods have caused unprecedented damage to critical infrastructure throughout the region. Major highways have been washed away or blocked by landslides; numerous bridges have collapsed, and communication networks remain disrupted in several districts. Power systems suffered extensive damage, leaving many communities without reliable electricity. Restoration efforts are ongoing, but many affected areas remain difficult to reach.

Hydropower Facilities Affected

The disaster has also severely impacted Nepal's hydropower sector. Rescue operations continue around several hydropower facilities along the Trishuli corridor, including Trishuli 3A, Trishuli 3B, Haku Besi, and Chilime, where floodwaters and debris caused significant destruction and trapped workers during the disaster. The damage to energy infrastructure is expected to have long-term economic consequences for the region and the nation.

An Urgent Humanitarian Crisis

Beyond the physical destruction, thousands of families are facing an ongoing humanitarian crisis. Many have lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods, livestock, and access to basic necessities. Communities urgently need clean drinking water, food supplies, temporary shelter, medical assistance, hygiene materials, and psychosocial support. Children, elderly people, and vulnerable families are among those most affected.
